Credit card industry security standards show promise

A recent study produced by data security company Imperva and the Ponemon Institute, found the Payment Card Industry's Data Security Standards, or PCI DSS, have proven successful.
The study covered 670 security practitioners and examined the level of PCI compliance as well as the company's performance in the past two years. Lending strong support to the new standards, 64 percent of all compliant organizations suffered no data breaches regarding credit card information and 63 percent suffered no more than one data breach of any kind. Comparatively, only 38 percent of non-compliant organizations suffered no credit card breaches and just 22 percent could claim only a single breach. Over a quarter of non-compliant organizations suffered more than five breaches.
At the time of the study roughly two-thirds of all respondents met PCI standards, up from half the year before, with only 16 percent having no level of implementation. Despite this success, however, most survey respondents continue to look unfavorably on the standards, with 88 percent denying any impact on the number of breaches.
The PCI data security standards are an attempt to protect credit cards from increasing data theft independent of government regulation. The standards developed from security programs created by the major credit card networks.
